Why You Need a Coach: Support, Strategy, and Sanity for Your Endurance Journey

Your alarm has gone off and before you can open your eyes, you are already thinking about that work meeting, getting the kids off to school and that workout you meant to program into your watch.

Now, the world is spinning around you and instead of that tempo workout, hill repeat or strength session you knew you had to do you are going to just jump in the pool for 20-30 minutes. It is still training after all isn’t it?

Well, is it? Sure, you got in the water to swim and that’s good but was it the right intensity? Should you be focusing on your swim at this point in your training cycle? What is your training cycle?

And now that I’ve gotten your attention you are asking yourself: Could a coach actually help someone like me?

The simple answer is: YES.

Many age groupers think that coaching is only for the pros or those that are at the elite level. Reality, is that coaches are for everybody including you the woman who has more plates to spin than fingers to spin them on.

Why? Again, a simple answer is PERSONALIZATION.

A coach that you are investing in must be creating training plans to fit your schedule, your goals and your available time. A training plan pulled from the internet doesn’t know that you have to attend a recital on Tuesday and a company dinner on Thursday.

Continuous 1:1 conversations, will allow a coach to build a training plan customized for you. By the way, when was the last time anybody did anything JUST FOR YOU?

So let’s review why an investment in a coach is the right choice:

  • Personalized Training, No Cookie Cutter Plans
    • Your goals, Your Plan
  • Accountability That Understands Your Life
    • 1:1 Bi-Weekly Conversations To Make Adjustments To Your Plan
  • Mental Support When Motivation Waivers
    • Had a bad training day? Your coach can comment in your plan and let you know that everything will be alright and changes going forward will take place.
  • Balancing Hard Efforts With Recovery
    • Recovery is where the magic happens but is not possible if your always going hard. Let your coach create the plan that incorporates those recovery days so you don’t have to think about it.
  • Race Prep With Confidence
    • Race day is almost here. Time to chat about a race strategy, review race checklist and receive the much needed pep talk.

These 5 bullet points can only happen if you and the coach you are hiring are on the same page. This starts with a free consultation which is an opportunity to help the coach understand your needs, wants, time availability and goals.

When a coach has a firm grasp on these concepts they can, and should, be able to craft a plan for you that meets each of your goals.

And during the training cycle, they must be available to you because life is not linear. That meeting that you didn’t think was going to happen has suddenly appeared on your calendar. You cannot get out of it and therefore that workout for that day is missed. It happens so don’t stress.

Your coach, when they review your training log can see where you are, what adjustments need to be made and get you back on track. A generic plan pulled from the internet is not going to be able to do that.

You have read this post but are still wondering if a coach is right for you? That is understandable because you are making a commitment. At the same time, the coach is making a commitment to you and is ready to guide you to your finish line.
